Rubinger held a trip to Shanghai for the first handbag auction.

The interface reporter interviewed him, from the rhythm of his work, who are the buyers of Chinese second-hand luxury goods, to what bags the ordinary white-collar workers of billionaires should invest in. We asked a lot of questions in a variety of ways, and Rubinger's answer was also very interesting.

Reporter: are you working hard now?

MR: it might be scary to speak out. I've been working.

You know, due to the development of science and technology, my generation is quite different from previous generations.

When I have dinner with collectors, if there are top collectors calling, I will answer them.

After I went back, I checked the mailbox. After WeChat and Whatsapp, I kept on line. The last thing I did before I went to bed was to reply to WeChat.

Because of the time difference of every city.

Paris

At the beginning of the work, China was already at 3 p.m., and I had to communicate with them until midnight.

In order to find a client to delegate the package I want to buy, I basically travel 2-3 times a month.

Reporter: after jumping to Christie's, is the resource richer?

MR: the main reason for my job hopping is the international background of Christie's. I really want to have global experience and understand buyers from other countries.

Because for me, handbag auction is about interpersonal relationship. You can hardly do anything until you get closer to your buyer. That's why this category can't be done very well.

I really want to know the customers here. Their demands are quite challenging.

It is certainly not black that they asked me to find.

Birkin

The bag is too ordinary. This bag is also sold at auction, but it is not Asian buyers who want to find it through Christie's. They want to find customized, special leather and diamond.

"Even if the catalogue is clearer, Chinese buyers also like me to take photos of iPhone and show them."

Reporter: the reason for moving to Hongkong is to get closer to buyers?

MR: we have observed that Asia is the most potential region in recent years.

Since Christie's first office in Asia is in Hongkong, it is also logical to compare the handbag to the city.

We have two auctions in Hongkong every year, one in spring, and the other in autumn.

Buyers from all over Asia come to Hongkong. Some may not be Christie's top customers. They will also be interested in catching up with all kinds of boutique.

Reporter: what preference do Chinese customers have for second-hand handbags?

MR: buyers of second hand bags in China are very concerned about the level. They are quite knowledgeable and know the colors, materials and prices clearly.

So an expert like me likes to get in touch with such customers.

Especially when they commissioned me to find the bag was very rare. I haven't seen it for nearly 10 years. It's very challenging.

Most of the mainland buyers have a certain collection, hoping that we can find a particular color and type of bags, usually very high value, very rare, the finest material, the least color.

Reporter: the European and American market has already formed the habit of buying second hand luxury goods. Are Chinese customers ready? How to educate the Chinese market?

MR: for the Chinese people, this is indeed a new world.

Since I arrived in Hongkong, almost all the media have asked me this question curiously, because Asia, especially China, seems to have a natural resistance to second-hand bags.

But what is interesting is that in actual work, I have not encountered any customer's concerns. Maybe everyone is thinking about this problem, but no one really says it.

I think this may be for two reasons. First, our catalog does not seem to be a collection of second-hand goods. Instead, you will see the most expensive package in the world, and you have to compete for it.

Although the interesting thing about auctions is that they may be photographed at a low price, this is not the place to bargain.

Second, it may be because we set up our own scoring system.

This system is very effective, and we are considering it to be used in other countries.

Reporter: did you find anything interesting in working for Chinese buyers?

MR: I find that Chinese buyers are different from Western buyers. After seeing catalogues and browsing the details, many people ask me for pictures.

This is really funny. Almost everyone wants me to shoot them with my own iPhone and send them to them.

The photos in the catalog are very professional, but they want to see the bag under natural light and want to see the result of using the mobile phone.

This is also the advantage of buying bags in Christie's.

I can shoot every angle until you are satisfied.

In the auction season, we will hire a part-time job to take pictures.
