Secretary of state Hilllary Clinton During her meeting with Burma President Thein Sein, the United States announced that the US government would ease the import ban on Burma in New York.

She said, U.S.A The government is normalizing trade relations with Burma because Burma is reforming, and both the government and the opposition have made requests.

These measures will provide more opportunities for Burma entrepreneurs to export their goods to the United States, Ms. Hilary said.

Last week, the winner of the Nobel prize in economics, Burma's leader of democracy movement, Suu Kyi, also urged the United States to lift import sanctions to support Burma's ongoing economic reform process.

Burma Apparel Association Welcoming the decision of the United States to cancel its import sanctions and hope that Burma's garment industry will become a beneficiary.

Hilary told Wu Dengsheng, "we will begin to relax restrictions on US imports of Burma goods. We hope this will provide more opportunities for the people of Burma to sell their products to the US market. Earlier, the United States has lifted restrictions on investment in Burma by its own businesses.

This is Wu Dengsheng's first visit to the United States to attend the UN General Assembly. He responded by saying, "the people of Burma are very happy to see the us relax its economic sanctions. We are very grateful for the actions of the United States.

The US government chose to lift the import ban at this time in order to let Wu Dengsheng get the credit. The lifting of import ban by the United States will enhance Wu Dengsheng's reputation. In the past, Wu Dengsheng had been under the shadow of Aung San Suu Kyi. Now, American officials seem to be anxious to stress the importance of Burma's president's ongoing reform process.

A senior US official has revealed that the process of lifting import sanctions is likely to be slow and gradual. The government will discuss the next action with the Congress, and it is likely that the restrictions will be lifted one by one on the basis of the industry.

A person familiar with the discussions in the Omaba administration said that some items, such as jade and other gemstones, might still be used as sanctions.

The lifting of import ban will promote the development of manufacturing industry in Burma, create employment and alleviate the poverty situation of the country with 60 million population. Economists point out that Burma's textile industry, agriculture and fishery will develop rapidly. Before the trade sanctions against Burma in 1990s, Burma was once a big exporter of clothing.

The United States is preparing to cancel import ban for several months. In a vote this August, the US Congress decided to extend the import ban on Burma products for another year, but authorized the White House to cancel the ban after determining that Burma met certain conditions.

Many analysts say the United States has been waiting for a clear signal from Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, before deciding on what to do next. Aung San Suu Kyi expressed support for lifting the ban when he visited the United States last week. Aung San Suu Kyi has always supported sanctions against the junta of Burma. This month, nearly 90 political prisoners were released in Burma, laying the foundation for the United States to relax the ban on Burma. However, human rights groups say hundreds of political prisoners are still in custody.
