Hou Yuanzhao, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of forestry, who has been paying close attention to the theory and technology development of domestic and foreign breeding for many years, pointed out that the trend of China's forest seed and seedling industry was on the development trend of international container seedlings.

The concept and technology of balanced root container seedling breeding began in France.

It is the key point of this technology to use non woven fabrics and other easy to penetrate and no litter materials as containers, and to take light substrates with strong water holding capacity, ventilation and strong pmission ability.


Why do we strongly advocate the use of nonwovens and other pparent materials instead of plastic containers? Why are forestry experts so optimistic about balancing the technology of root container seedling raising? What are the technical advantages of this technology? What is the popularization and application of this new technology in China? With these questions, China green time reporter interviewed Hou Yuanzhao researcher and the relevant researchers of the Shandong Academy of forestry who introduced the technology of balanced root container seedling and introduced it earlier.


Why is non-woven fabric container superior?

According to the concept of modern seedling raising, good seedling container and substrate are the key factors to cultivate good seedlings.

Plastic bags, hard plastic pipes and so on are not easy to penetrate materials as containers and clay as substrates to grow seedlings, and the seedlings will inevitably develop abnormal root system.

The root system of seedlings is abnormal, which leads to poor anchorage of trees and little space for absorbing water and nutrients, resulting in slow growth and poor resistance.

Hou Yuanzhao researchers pointed out that if the container is chosen unproperly, the consequence may be the failure of afforestation.

Monomers, easy to penetrate, easy to decompose, and non recyclable containers have become the mainstream of nursery containers.


Why does the light matrix nonwoven container seedling have higher survival rate, and the growth of trees is obviously better than that of plastic container seedlings? Hou Yuanzhao researcher gave an explanation.

He said that the light matrix nonwoven container seedlings had no root entangling phenomenon, but also formed a strange effect: once the seedlings were planted, they would grow directly and avoid squatting seedlings. If the seedlings had callus formed after air cutting, they would burst roots and the ground part would grow fiercely.

So far, other types of containers can't do this.

These exposing the outer wall of the container and forming the root of the callus, constantly supplying nutrients internally, forming a physiological state that is ready for release.

In the new idea of seedling raising, this root end callus is more advantageous than forming complex roots.


Why is it called "revolutionary technology of forestry seedling raising"?


The technology of balanced seedling raising is known as a revolutionary technology in the field of forestry seedling raising in China.

What advantages does it have in afforestation? Hou Yuanzhao's researcher has summarized this.


Advantage 1: thoroughly solved the various consequences caused by the problem of poor roots, and raised various resistance (such as wind resistance, drought resistance, pest and disease resistance) and growth rate (such as no seedlings and direct growth after afforestation), which greatly reduced the possibility of turning young trees into small old trees.


Advantage two: the afforestation season is extended. In the north, afforestation can be done in other seasons except in winter. In the south, afforestation can be done all year round.


Advantage three: afforestation survival rate is high.

Theoretically, there will be no death due to the cause of seedling itself.

Even death is due to external causes.


Advantage four: suitable for afforestation in arid areas and mountainous areas.

Since the seedlings of non-woven container seedlings do not loose and fall off and have high fertility substrates, the seedlings also have a longer buffering and drought resisting period after planting.

Advantage five: do not plant seedlings after planting, grow directly.

If the seedlings have callus formed by air cutting, there will be an outbreak of rooting and direct growth of the aboveground parts.


Advantage six: realize the integration of seedling technology.

That is, the seedling raising procedures after seeding or cutting seedlings are completed in the same container, until the afforestation on the mountain is very efficient.


Advantage seven: Afforestation efficiency is high.

When plastic bags are planted, it is necessary to rip up bags and form white pollution. When hard plastic pipe seedlings are planted, they must be recovered, which is very cumbersome and will increase the cost of recycling.

Nonwovens container seedling afforestation will not bring such problems, save the containers from recycling, and the weight of individual seedlings is very light.


Advantage eight: if our country enters the era of afforestation with full use of non-woven fabrics to balance root container seedlings, it can effectively improve the quality of China's artificial forests, improve tree health and growth, increase carbon sinks and reduce carbon emissions (a low carbon seedling raising afforestation technology).


Advantage nine: as the matrix formula contains slow-release fertilizer, which can meet the use of seedlings for 3 months, so this technology has also created a new opportunity for soilless cultivation, energy saving and low carbon.


Advantage ten: this technology can be applied to the fields of agriculture, gardening and flower breeding, and bring about similar ecological and economic effects.

For example, it can be used for the production of vegetables or flowers in the suburbs.


It can be said that if the balanced root propagation technology is widely applied in the field of forest seedling raising in China, it will greatly improve the quality of China's plantation and bring revolutionary impact on the development of modern forestry in China.


It laid a solid foundation for China's seedling technology revolution.


The Shandong Academy of forestry was the first prototype of the French balanced root container seedling system introduced in 2000.

Since then, after more than 10 years of continuous improvement and innovation, the development of non-woven container seedling molding machine, performance, efficiency and specifications, than the original machine has more than one level of upgrading, far beyond the existing international technology.


The seedling technology system is mainly composed of hardware and soft technology.

The hardware equipment includes automatic container forming machine, specification nonwoven material, formula matrix, supporting seedling box and nursery rack, and related matrix stirring filter, matrix conveyor, seedling hardening system, etc. soft technology includes reproductive material juvenility technology, mother plant culture technology, strip mining technology, cuttage technology, especially air cutting technology, and Seedling hardening technology.

The seedling container molding machine is the core. It makes the forestry seedling into a series of simple and even automatic technologies, and realizes the completion of the process of matrix loading and container forming. It lays a solid foundation for forestry factory breeding.


According to Wu Dejun, vice president of Shandong Academy of forestry, the introduction of balanced root seedling container molding machine has just been introduced into China, and some of which are "not acclimatized", which are mainly characterized by low efficiency of equipment, short service life of feeding screw, expensive nonwoven fabric, poor adhesive bonding, noise of equipment, and inaccurate instrument display.

All these problems have been solved and 5 national utility models have been created.

Compared with the original prototype, the container molding machine itself has been reborn into an innovative machine system.


Recently, a symposium on "balanced root light matrix nonwoven container seedling technology" was held in Ji'nan, Shandong.

The reason why "low key" is because the Shandong Academy of forestry did not invite the media to attend the meeting and restricted the number of participants.

Nevertheless, there were more than 140 participants in the "small" seminar. They came from 17 provinces, autonomous regions, and urban forest and seedling management departments, forestry research institutes, state farms, breeding enterprises and units.

In fact, the new technology has attracted much attention in the field of forest seedling raising. The modern seedling raising concept embodied in this technology has been respected by the seedling industry. Some large afforestation projects also include the use of non-woven container seedlings.

Especially in the south, some large nursery gardens have fully adopted this technology.


At present, the technology has been applied in 14 provinces (districts and cities) such as Shandong, Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi, Shanghai, Xinjiang, Zhejiang, Hubei and so on.

The technology has been applied in Shandong to cultivate more than 2000 barren hills, such as Pinus thunbergii, Platycladus orientalis, C. lanceolata and Prunus armeniaca. The survival rate of seedlings has reached more than 96% (due to non container reasons), and eucalyptus, Chinese fir, Shi Nan, jujube and Camellia oleifera grown in Shandong Province have reached 100 million strains.


A new technology revolution is being carried out in the field of forestry seedling raising in China, with the development of the balanced root container seedling technology developed by Shandong Academy of forestry.
